Acting Governor Francis Congratulates 911 Emergency Operators
Acting Governor Gregory R. Francis congratulated the territory’s newest 911 operators in a ceremony held on Monday, July 20, 2009 at Government House, St. Croix. Acting Governor Francis joined VITEMA officials, to include Executive Assistant Clement “Cain” Magras, State Deputy Director of Training Conrad Knowles, Deputy Director of Operations Jackie Heyliger and Senator Sammuel Sanes in offering well-wishes to the 18 graduates of the emergency operators training program.
Over the course of the 45 day training program, the operators learned the new 911 phone system, data input and priority dispatch, sensitivity training and basic first responder and EMS skills. The graduates also acquired a working knowledge that would prepare them for emergency situations involving HAZMAT, domestic violence and weapons of mass destruction. Several of the newly trained operators have also achieved further distinction as nationally certified 911 emergency responders.
Acting Governor Francis encouraged the 911 operators to perform their jobs well and with patience and compassion. “No matter who it is, or what their complaint, be professional and always be courteous. Remember that the interaction they have with you will be the beginning of an experience that will end wonderfully for some or can turn out to be the worst nightmares for others. And what you say and how you say it can, and often will leave an impression.” He also reminded the new operators to work together as a team.
The 911 graduating class consisted of 17 females, one male, and 3 Spanish speakers.
