Lt. Gov. Reminds Public of Recently Enacted RulesRegarding Inter-island Vehicle Transport

Lieutenant Governor Gregory R. Francis is reminding residents of the community of recently enacted legislation that eliminates the need for a lien search issued by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor or a shipping clearance form from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in order to ship vehicles between the islands of St. Croix and St. Thomas.

“The new legislation, Act 7097, makes the only requirement for the interisland transportation of vehicles a valid registration which must be presented to the shipping carrier,” Lt. Governor Francis said. “We find that many people are misinformed or unaware about the amended statute and are still coming to our office and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for documents that are no longer needed when shipping vehicles between St. Croix and St. Thomas.”

The amendment was passed by the 28th Legislature of the Virgin Islands in August 2009. Lt. Governor Francis also cautioned that this law only applies to the shipping of vehicles within the Territory. Those persons wishing to transport their vehicles outside the Virgin Islands, whether to the States, the Caribbean or elsewhere are still required to obtain a lien search letter from the Lt. Governor’s Office and a shipping clearance form from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
