Lt. Governor Francis Attending Winter Meeting of the National Lieutenant Governors Association
Lieutenant Governor Gregory R. Francis has departed the territory to attend the Winter Meeting of the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA). NLGA represents the official in every state and territory who is first in line of gubernatorial succession. Thirty-three of the country’s second-highest ranking state and territorial officials will gather in Washington D.C. from March 11 – 13, 2008.
“This meeting is an outstanding opportunity to bring home practical solutions to shared problems,” said Lt. Governor Francis. “Many of the territory’s issues are not unique.”
The two-day meeting will also feature experts speaking about the exploding prison populations and ways to address re-entry of offenders into society. The attendees will be briefed on Congressional action which may impact their jurisdictions, with a special emphasis on health care and transportation. The unique challenges of smaller and rural communities will also be addressed.
While at the meeting, Lt. Governor Francis will participate in discussions on various policy resolutions, which cover topics including the presidential primaries, the digital divide, interoperability of emergency communicators, asthma and cardiovascular awareness. Francis also plans to report on the successful launch of Helping Virgin Islanders Breathe Easier – the local component of a multi-state asthma awareness/ public health initiative of the NLGA.
