Lt. Governor Francis Pledges Support of Displaced St. John Seniors PDF Print

Lt. Governor Gregory R. Francis recently traveled to St. John to meet with a group of senior citizens who have been displaced from the Calabash Boom Senior Citizens Center since early 2007.  The group of 36 elderly St. Johnians lost use of the facility when the site was reclaimed by the Housing Finance Authority for redevelopment purposes.   The Lt. Governor was joined by Human Services Deputy Commissioner Moleto Smith and St. John Administrator Leona Smith.

Francis reassured the senior citizens of his commitment to their well-being and welfare.  “We are here today because of you.  You are very important to us and our duty is to keep you happy,” he affirmed.

Since leaving the Calabash Boom Center, the seniors have used the Cruz Bay Multi-purpose Center of the Department of Human Services, an inadequate space for their needs.  The Department of Human Services administers programs for senior citizen programs throughout the territory.

According to Moleto Smith, the Department has identified a suitable space at the George Simmonds Terrace and is working with the Virgin Islands Housing Authority to finalize a lease.  He asked the seniors’ indulgence for a few more weeks while the building is prepared for their use.  Smith anticipates that the new center will be ready by mid-February.

The senior citizens likened their plight to homelessness.  “We are like birds, flying,” one noted.  The senior also used the opportunity of the Lt. Governor’s visit to make various requests including additional staff for the center and a vehicle and driver to transport them from home to the senior center.

Lt. Governor Francis committed to follow up with the Departments of Human Services and Property and Procurement to ensure that the senior citizen’s needs are met.
