Governor Francis Says Hurricane Preparedness Includes Review of Insurance Coverage

Lieutenant Governor Gregory R. Francis encourages all Virgin Islanders to review their insurance policies as part of their ongoing preparations for the 2008 hurricane season.  Francis, who serves as Commissioner of Insurance, said residents should take steps now to ensure they have the right type and amount of insurance coverage to protect their assets.

“Virgin Islanders have experienced the devastation that hurricanes can cause,” says the Lieutenant Governor.  “The devastation is further compounded when the ability to recover from the storm is affected by inadequate insurance coverage.”  According to Francis, a review of insurance coverage should be a standard component of hurricane planning and emergency management.

Francis suggests residents do the following as they prepare for the hurricane season:

• Review their homeowners’ insurance policy and make sure that it is sufficient;
• Buy enough insurance to rebuild the home and replace all personal belongings;
• Have an updated inventory – including pictures – of personal property; and
• Store important documents such as insurance policies, deeds, property records, etc. in a waterproof and fireproof container or at an off island location.

Lt. Governor Francis reminds the community to update their property insurance regularly to include improvements, major purchases and increased rebuilding costs.
