Lt. Governor Gregory R. Francis Participates in Launch of Virgin Islands Quarter PDF Print

On Friday, October 9, 2009, Lt. Governor Francis joined Governor John P. DeJongh, Jr., the Department of the Interior, Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas, Mr. Tony Babauta, Mr. Andy Brunhart, Deputy Director of the U.S. Mint and Delegate Donna Christensen for the launching of the Virgin Islands quarter.  The ceremony was held on St. Thomas at Emancipation Garden.

The Virgin Islands quarter is the fifth quarter to be produced in the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories quarters program, which honors the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands).  The 2009 quarter program is an offshoot of the state quarters program which was launched in 1999.

Francis congratulated Virgin Islands Delegate to Congress, Donna Christensen, for her advocacy for the territory to be included in this historic program.  He also commended the residents of the community who collaboratively worked to design the quarter.

Lt. Governor Francis told the crowd gathered at the Emancipation Garden that he is most excited about the quarter because of its historic value.  “Our rich culture and history has been memorialized on a coin that will be in circulation for generations,” he stated.  “Be proud that you can carry a piece of Virgin Islands history in your pocket and let that be an inspiration to do everything we can to keep our islands clean and beautiful, to keep our community safe, to work together towards progress and to continue to be people who are united in pride and hope.”

The quarter is also expected to be an invaluable asset to the territory’s tourism and marketing programs as it is transacted around the world.
