Penalty and Interest Waiver for 2008 Property Taxes to End on January 20th

The Office of the Lieutenant Governor advises Virgin Islands property owners that pursuant to Act. No. 7241, penalties and interest will be charged on the 2008 bills beginning January 20, 2012.  The 2008 property tax bills were issued in July 2011 and became delinquent on October 20, 2011.

Act 7241 states that:  “Notwithstanding the penalty and interest provisions of Title 29 Virgin Islands Code, section 2494, no interest or penalty may be levied on any assessment for the property tax years 2006, 2007, and 2008 for six months after the date of issuance of the respective year’s tax assessment.”

Accordingly, Virgin Islands property owners are encouraged to pay their 2008 property tax bills before January 20, 2012 in order to avoid the assessment of penalty and interest.  After that date, penalty and interest charges will be assessed.
