Property Owners Reminded of Deadline for Payment of Delinquent Property Taxes; Encouraged to Make Arrangements for Payment
The Office of the Lieutenant Governor reminds Virgin Islands property owners whose names appeared in the recently published delinquent property listing that the 30 day period to pay the outstanding taxes will expire on Friday, July 1, 2011.
The delinquent notice was published in local newspapers on May 25 and 27, 2011and can be viewed on the Lt. Governor’s website, www.ltg.gov.vi. Pursuant to Virgin Islands law, “unless such delinquent taxes and public sewer system fees are paid within a period of 30 days from the publication date of the said notice, the property of the tax payers will be attached and sold in the manner provided in this subtitle.” (Virgin Islands Code Title 33 §2433) Accordingly, taxpayers will have until July 1 to contact the Tax Collector’s Office in their district to make arrangements for payment or enter into an installment agreement.
Publication of the delinquent lists is mandated by VIC T33 §2496, which requires the Lieutenant Governor to publish the names of all delinquent real property tax owners.
