Attending Pan-American Games in Toronto, Canada

Lieutenant Governor Osbert E. Potter will be out of the Territory on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 to attend the 2015 Pan American Games. The 2015 Pan-Am Games are held in Toronto, Canada from July 10 to 26, 2015. A delegation of eighteen athletes travelled to represent the Virgin Islands. Lieutenant Governor Potter will serve as head of the Virgin Islands delegation.

The Toronto 2015 Pan-Am Games is a major sporting event featuring summer sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The competition is held among athletes from nations of the Americas, every four years in the year before the Summer Olympic Games.

The Virgin Islands athletes have been training for years to reach the level of expertise in their field that is required. The bigger goal for many of the athletes is to represent the Virgin Islands at the Summer Olympics in Rio in 2016.

Lieutenant Governor Osbert E. Potter will be attending the closing ceremonies to represent the Virgin Islands. According to the Lieutenant Governor, “We need to support our athletes when we can, wherever they are. When they do good, we do good.  The encouragement is always good for them, especially when they are out of the Territory.”

Governor Kenneth E. Mapp is also out of the territory and scheduled to return on July 22, 2015.  In accordance with the Revised Organic Act, Senate President Neville James will serve as Acting Lieutenant Governor. Lieutenant Governor Potter will return to the territory on July 27, 2015.
