I join a deeply shocked and saddened Virgin Islands community in extending condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr. St. Clair Alphonso “Whadablee” DeSilvia, a dedicated patriarch, musical icon, and embodiment of Virgin Islands pride. I extend a prayer for comfort, strength, and for the gift of God’s grace to all who mourn his loss.

Recognized throughout the Virgin Islands and Caribbean as a gifted calypsonian, St. Clair was profoundly talented. Music served as his passion and will undoubtedly be remembered as his legacy.

I am particularly moved by this loss, as St. Clair has been my friend from childhood, when we first met in the third grade at the St. Thomas-St. John Seventh-day Adventist School.

During my tenure at the Legislature of the Virgin Islands, we had the opportunity to reconnect and I shared regular interactions with him. I respected his work ethic and the commitment to his endeavors. His contributions personally, professionally, and musically touched many lives near and far.

St. Clair was no stranger to the stage or performing. It was his natural habitat, as the stage and microphone belonged to him. He dedicated his life to preserving our culture and traditions. He strived to keep music alive and took pride in every lyric that he wrote and ensured significance in its meaning.

He left his mark throughout the musical arena as an unmatched calypsonian with a talent that earned him countless wins in the coveted Calypso Monarch competition. I have enjoyed a number of his performances and like many who listened to him, I felt his true passion for the musical artform.

Most recently, I applauded his recognition by the 34th Legislature in honoring him for his musical influence and impact on the Territory. He was truly a stalwart of our community and will forever be recognized as a trailblazer in Virgin Islands history.

During this time of mourning, I encourage everyone who knew him to find comfort in the wonderful times they shared with him. On behalf of the members of my staff and of a grateful community, I extend my sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in eternal peace.
